In this issue, I’m sharing an updated version of a post I made a few years ago in response to numerous requests for dinner party playlists. The playlists are shared in a themed format that responds to cheeky texts I’ve received over the years. The texts below are not real… or are they? You decide.
Useful for: The Gallery Crowd Dinner
“So I’m having a very eclectic dinner party. Lots of art people, most of them like to talk about themselves and art. Music can’t be too punchy, but enough to last several hours well past when the cigarettes have finished. Wouldn’t be upset to have little 90s rap mixed in.”
Playlist: Tokyo Guest Mix by Frangi
Useful for: The Quintessential Dolce Vita Dinner Party
“I’m having a summer dinner party in the garden. The night is unlikely to escalate but guests will likely lock into deep conversations about both meaningful and meaningless things. Ideally, the music should be nostalgic, but melancholic. Loads of white candles will be lit and people will take pictures of their place settings.”
Playlist: Dolce, Dolce
Useful for: I Over-Invited Dinner Party
“I’m having one of those standing/sitting lively buffet dinner parties that will likely overwhelm my tiny flat. It was supposed to be six people but now it is 26. I want funky music that people recognize but are not altogether familiar with. If possible, music should work for both dancing and sitting. Ideally, people say “this playlist is groovin’’’ many times throughout the night. Thank you!”
Playlist: basta basta by coletrickle
Useful for: Ottolenghi Night
“I need a good playlist for a group cooking dinner party. We have rented a chalet for the weekend and staying in tonight for a nice boozy red wine and pumpkin gnocchi… which we are making from scratch by the way (will share the recipe tomorrow). I imagine some people will want to sing along, I won’t though. Has to work through Sonos. ”
Playlist: L’Atelier at Disko Disko 東京
Useful for: Drinks Transformed Into Dinner Thing
"Hey man, been on the boat all day. Drinks, etc. Super fun, wish you were here. Anyway, an impromptu dinner party on my roof is about to take place. Can you hit me with a good playlist to keep the vibe going?"
