I’ve been in this melancholy mood lately. Happens sometimes. I recently watched the film le Otto Montagne during a rainy Sunday in Milan and since then I’ve listened to the soundtrack on repeat. It strikes a chord and consists exclusively of songs by the genius Daniel Norgren. That nordic folk sound that pinches the heart strings. I picked up a fun book called Butter and read it during the last few sunny September days in Mallorca. It’s this cult Japanese bestseller about a gourmet cook and serial killer and the journalist intent on cracking her case. Good prose. Leaning into this wine bar trend which led me to a great dinner with friends at Bar La Sang in Palma (also Bar Nico in Milano if you are into this stuff!).
Made a mixtape in New York for one of my favorite SoundCloud channels called Pantone. Played a few tracks at a gig at Ella Funt, but the sound wasn’t optimized. Pretty girls though. Nailed the down loops on a kite safari in Egypt with Heli where we were fortunate enough to see a moonset over the Red Sea. While there, I couldn’t stop listening to this mini EP by Aquamarine. It's funny how certain songs in certain moments can grip you.
Attended a birthday dinner at this vegan place in Notting Hill called Holy Carrot which reminded me of the restaurants I would seek out during vegetarian days. Lost my Eurostar train due to the strict 35-minute prior check-in protocol. Stayed at a great spot in Paris called Hotel Hana which has this cheeky Japanese/French vibe and serves udon for room service breakfast! Narrowly missed out on a delicious steak au poivre at Sugaar due to slow service, but Dj’d in the Opéra Comique with a late-night private piano concerto in the theater. Fell into the downstream flow of Paris Basel and was most impressed by Heinz Burggreun's personal collection which is on display at the Musee de l’Orangerie. That guy had a knack for timing.
Posting up in the Bay Area for a minute and spending time at the lovely Arise yoga studio in Pac Heights. The music could use a boost but the space is cozy. Jet lag hit hard so I listened to a masterclass podcast episode on franchising with homie Alex Sloane laying down knowledge. Loving the sleek coworking vibes at the Canopy space on Fillmore. The AI buzz is palpable and it is exciting to see the enthusiasm from our locally based portfolio companies. Went to see the Ry X at the Grace Cathedral whose music leaves you feeling a bit more lugubrious than usual. Currently eyeing a round at The Brambles, the hyped new links course north of Napa, and figuring out how to get a gig at the legendary Bar Part Time. My rockstar crush Maggie Rogers comes into town next week so I’m hoping to catch her show at the Chase Center before my Golden Gate Bridge marathon.
Anyway, what are you to?
