Known as the “pueblo magico”, Bacalar has always had its mystical appeal. Launched in late 2023, the newest hotel on the scene was designed by renowned Mexican architect Frida Escobedo and hidden in dense greenery, the hotel is a jungle dreamland that is part Swiss Family Robinson and part Aman. Elevated simple life at its finest.
Reopened in January, this historic hotel has been restored under new ownership as the place to stay in the area. The landmark building was carefully preserved and elevated with neo-colonial style by Oficina Sarmiento Legorreta and provides a contemporary option for those passing through or looking for an extended stay in Baja’s version of the Wild West.
Falling directly out of an @accidentlywesanderson post, this alpine mountain hotel feels like stepping into an adult summer camp. I visited in January during Murren’s infamous Inferno Ski Race, where the hotel became HQ for all event activities. French/Moroccan designer, Ramdane Touhami, bought the hotel a few years back and gave the chocolate box Swiss mountain town a new place to stay with a contemporary twist.
If you could dream up a place to unplug and restore, this would be it. Nestled in a valley amidst the Walter Bay Conservancy deep in the Western Cape of South Africa, lies this regenerative home away from home. Best described by one of the guests as; “Deeply nourishing on all levels. Silent wandering in the exquisite, wild mountains - lush with green leucadendrons, forested nooks, lily ponds, and ancient, lichen-bearded milkwood trees.” As a bonus, it is also located twenty minutes from the world-class kite surf spot.
While we didn’t stay at the Venice Venice during a recent trip for Carnevale, I certainly wish we had. In a city steeped with decadent charm and in-your-face tourism, the Venice Venice packs an exciting punch with its retro-progressive vibe. Contemporary art, young people, and a modern take on Italian cuisine. Perfect to celebrate a weekend with friends or a sojourn with your mistress… your call.
